Job Description
Educational & other qualifications
  • MBA from premier institutes with specialization in finance, rural management or operations research
  • Excellent communication skills in English & one ore more Indian languages
Work experience
  • 2-4years experience in a microfinance institution at middle and senior management levels
  • Strong understanding of microfinance operations is essential
  • Exposure to several MFIs across different contexts/operational models is a definite plus

Key roles & responsibilities
  • Pre-investment due diligence:  Providing need-based support to the due diligence teams of different lenders/investors (under IFMR Trust umbrella and outside).
  • Post-investment monitoring:  Providing need-based support to lenders/investors in periodic monitoring of MFI operations, post investment in these MFIs and reporting on any warning signals or signs of deterioration in quality of operations.
  • Identifying gaps:  Visiting MFIs and working with MFI top management and operations team to identify weak areas and gaps in the operations of the MFI. These weaknesses may be in corporate governance, quality of field operations, human resources, MIS, monitoring and control systems or financial health of the MFI.
  • Reconstruction strategy:  Working with investors, lenders, MFI management and other stakeholders to work out a mutually agreed strategy for reconstructing/re-engineering the MFI and addressing the gaps/weak areas.
  • Action plan:  Developing an agreed time-bound action plan, with specific objectives and milestones, for implementing the reconstruction strategy. Action planning would include definition of human resource and infrastructure requirements in a brief business proposal, detailing the financial commitments required.
  • Implementation:  (1) Building a need-based and context-specific team for implementation of the action plan.  The implementation team would need to work with the staff of the MFI, to implement the action plan; (2) Supervision and management of the implementation team, including overall administration; (3) Direct support to the implementation team as and when required; (4) Monitoring the progress of the reconstruction/re-engineering exercise, vis-à-vis the milestones specified in the action plan; (5) Detailed documentation of the reconstruction/re-engineering process, with specific focus on the key learnings; (6) Assessment of results at the end of the exercise, vis-à-vis the objectives as per the plan.
  • Follow-up:  Periodic visits to the MFI post implementation, to assess if the identified weak areas/gaps have not crept up again.
  • Overall business strategy:  Developing a Business Plan for the Backup Servicer, in consultation with IFMR Trust umbrella organisations. This would include working on a product offering, which would be a combination of technology, human resources, microfinance products, operational model and control systems that can be easily 'transported' to reconstruct/re-engineer an MFI or set up a new MFI.
