Mark Zuckerberg: technology does not create more jobs, but increases pay

Thursday, November 9th, 2017

The Facebook co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg thinks that technology does not create more jobs but improves the pay for tech workers. Zuckerberg has shared his opinion on a Facebook blog post on Wednesday.

Zuckerberg made this observation after visiting a wind farm in Oklahoma. Mark completed his “Year of Travel” challenge on Wednesday and shared his travel observations on his Facebook page. He believes that the job in wind energy is more sustainable than oil and gas. The oil prices are volatile, making the jobs energy sectors like oil and gas unreliable and temporary.

He curiously observed the effects of technology on the job market. He writes, “A lot of people focus on whether technology creates or destroys jobs. I've seen both this year --improving tech has created more jobs in some industries and in others, it has eliminated jobs. But perhaps the more common dynamic I've seen is that the number of jobs stays about the same, but in order to operate the increasingly advanced technology, people need more training and therefore get more pay.”

Zuckerberg explains his opinion by giving an example of efficient turbines. More efficient turbines create fewer turbines to produce the energy. But the advance turbines are complex to operate, which requires specially trained professionals that eventually get the higher salary packages. The same applies to jobs in all the industrial sectors.

The Facebook co-founder is one of the world’s billionaires who is turning his attention to the impact of technology on nation’s employment. Most of the surveys and studies from different universities suggest the same. The advancements in the technology are going to eliminate many professions in coming few years but at the same time, it is going to create new opportunities for highly-skilled job roles.

Mark Zuckerberg’s social networking company, Facebook is known for hiring some of the best minds in the world. Facebook employs over 17,048 tech professionals around the company’s locations in the world. The company believes in hiring fewer employees that can deliver maximum output. The Silicon Valley-based company offers an average annual salary of $142,000 to a software engineer.
