Kerala gets Indias largest startup incubator; plans to create 2.5 lakh jobs

Tuesday, January 15th, 2019

The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated India’s largest startup incubation centre in Kochi on Sunday. The incubation facility is spread across 1.82 lakh sq ft area and located at Kalamassery near Kochi. The facility has emerged as South Asia’s largest startup ecosystem. Kerala government also believes that the startup incubator will create 2.5 lakh jobs

The eight-story high facility in Kalamassery has beaten the status of Bhamashah Techno Hub, Jaipur, which is spread across 1 lakh sq ft area. The Integrated Startup Complex is part of Kerala Startup Mission initiative. The government wants to transform the state into the biggest IT hub in the world.

The incubation hub is part of 13.2 acres Technology Innovation Zone (TIZ), which will house incubators, accelerators, and Centres of Excellence (CoEs). The incubation centre will offer high quality infrastructure for the development and growth of tech startups. The state government hopes to create 2.5 lakh direct IT jobs with this startup hub.

M Sivasankar, the IT secretary of Kerala said, “This has never happened in our country, where it usually takes a couple of years for an incubator to get the whole area occupied. The first three floors of the new complex have been furnished, while the rest of the floors have already got allotted to various startups.”

The startup complex also has modern facilities such as the Maker Village that offers hardware startups, Bionest that promotes medical technologies and BRINC which is India’s first international accelerator for hardware startups. The centre is inspired by Station-F in Paris, which is spread across 3.67 lakh sq ft area.

The state government has plans to dedicate 2.3 crore sq ft of space for IT industry across the state. Kerala will have a total incubation space of 5 lakh sq ft, making it the largest incubation facility in the world.
